Chapter Twenty-Six
I thought I should tell Alcibiades, despite my expectation of finding him still with his wife. But I found him surrounded by friends who had brought him the news already.
âThe ones who want peace are the winners,â he groaned. âEndius for the Spartans and here weâll have Nikeas bleating that we ought to make the first move and give back my hostages, screw his sheepâs arse. Heâll give heart to all the cowards who say we have lost.â
âBut we have lost.â
âIn that case why should I bother? This stinking city is so corrupt we ought to be glad itâs defeated.â
Phrynichus scowled at the very idea. âI say we just need new allies.â
âWhoâd want to be allies with losers?â
âArgonauts?â
âAre they so stupid?â
âHow else can we stir things up?â
Alcibiades turned from Phrynichus. âI have to take Cleonâs place.â
A low female voice: âYou could not: because you're not Cleon- youâre different. You need to be greater than him.â
Alcibiadesâ eyes nearly popped. âBut if thereâs no war any more I canât be a general.â
âThatâs what I mean. Youâll be a statesman instead. Win the peace.â
âGain distance from Cleon,â I said.
His eyes swivelled. âYou taught Hipparete this?â
I told him how Socrates put it.
âThe old fraudâs alive- is he back from the war?â
âBut not in good shape: you should see him.â
Alcibiades shrugged this off.
âYes, you should.â I found myself angry again. âYou didnât lift a finger to save him from going to fight, because you said what mattered more was to âthrow a bone to Cleonâ. He didnât complain because he's your friend. Make it up to him. You can be generous.â
âPeople might laugh.â
âYou can rise above that. Be your own man,â said his wife.
âThe people will see you have a good heart: one better than Cleon,â I said.
No more was said on the subject. But only a few days later Alcibiades drew me aside. âIâve given the matter some thought, Artabas: the old fraud needs a wife.â
âHe told me he could not afford one.â
âIndeed, so Iâve found him a girl with a dowry.â
